Special Court has sentenced BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia to five years in jail in the Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case.

About 10 years ago, in July 2008, when the army-backed caretaker government was in charge, the case was filed by the Bangladesh Anti-Corruption Commission.

There is a complaint that the Zia orphanage trust was misused by the power of the Prime Minister as many as 2 crore 10 lakh taka 71 thousand and 671 rupees for orphans, but they were not spent in the orphanage or trust. Rather, it has been embezzled by keeping the money in its own right.

Complaints were made in 2009 after the investigation, but in March 2014 the charges were framed.

The other accused in the case are his son Tarique Rahman, currently in London and former chief secretary Kamal Uddin Siddiqui, the nephew of former president Ziaur Rahman, Mominur Rahman is absconding. Magura's former MP Kazi Salimul Haque Kamal and businessman Sharfuddin Ahmed are in jail.

The trial of this case is going on in the Special Judge Court of Bakshi Bazar in Dhaka for almost 10 years. Of these, 32 have testified, and the logic has been going on for 16 days. Several arrest warrants were issued against Khaleda Zia several times because she did not appear before the court.

Khaleda Zia's lawyers told the court that Khaleda Zia was not involved in this incident, and that money was not embezzled because these funds are still deposited as banks.

Khaleda Zia said in court to defend herself, all cases against her against political vendetta, which have no legal grounds. This case has also been made for the political purpose. He also described the investigation report as unfair.
